Name: Isaac Mackey Join Date: February 2019 Occupation (2021): PhD student at University of California, Santa Barbara Location (2021): Santa Barbara, California
Background: I'm from Richmond, Virginia. I started rowing on the University of Virginia Men’s Rowing team. I've competed in eights races including the Head of the Charles, Head of the Schuylkill, Head of the Hooch, Dad Vail, and ACRA regattas. Now I train with the University of California, Santa Barbara, on Lake Cachuma. Outside of rowing, I'm an active swimmer, cyclist, and runner.
What he brings to the team: I have experience in competitive rowing and endurance sports. In 2014, I cycled 4,500 miles from Austin, Texas, to Anchorage, Alaska, with Megan Bentzin. I learned how to cover long distances in various geographies and weather. The only thing I regret about that cycling trip is that we didn't have a reason to do it faster. My goal is to make sure the team is physically prepared for rowing and mentally prepared for racing.
Right now: I'm a graduate student at the University of California, Santa Barbara, studying for a PhD in computer science and working as a teaching assistant.
